PLANTS IN SCHOOLS

The latest research on the benefits of plants in schools has just been made available from the University of Technology Sydney.

The trials found that classroom plants consistently led to improved performance in spelling, mathematics and science, ie, across the curriculum, for possibly a variety of interlinked reasons.  And from our discussions with staff at the three schools, there seemed to be unanimous agreement among teachers and students that plants in the classrooms improved their appearance and ‘ambience’.

This was a preliminary study, the first of its kind in aiming to compare performance of school students in classrooms with and without plants.  Further studies are needed to provide formal confirmation of the results.

However, taken with the findings of other international research on the benefits of indoor plants, it seems reasonable that a recommendation could be made to education authorities for indoor plants to be a standard installation of school classrooms.

This paper an be found in the Resources Menu or click here.

How We Create

FMA Australia – Ideaction 2010

NIPA was represented by Prof. Margaret Burchett at this years Ideaction in Perth.  Rather than take a booth NIPA chose to develop a poster which could be used after the event.  The posters are attached to a wall, the owner stand near and talks to passers by.

UTS Science also developed a very attractive and informative brochure which Margaret handed out.  Download here.

Chris Johnson (TCC) and Prof. Margaret Burchett in front of poster.

For full text and details

The poster in glorious colour and full size (90X60cm) is available from NIPA at cost ($45 + GST + postage) or download an A4 version here.  This is also available in a double sided version which is a bit easier to read in the A4 size.

It was good to see another poster from Ontera Carpet Tiles displaying a fabulous photo of indoor plants in modern containers from a new Brisbane job.  Almost like a before and after.

Green Stress BusteR VIDEO

Research finds indoor plants reduce stress.

This video was recorded from Channel 7's Morning show Sunrise on 16 June 2010.  This interview with Professor Margaret Burchett and Melissa Doyle discusses the UTS findings below.

Please wait for small commercial to finish.   Click here to see video.

Medical research shows:

  • Stress reduces productivity and performance and leads to illness;

  • Stress-related illness is a widespread urban health concern.

The University of Sydney (UTS) study shows large stress reductions with indoor plants:

  • First such study to use standard international psychological surveys

  • 40 respondents.

Results:

Staff with one or more plants in their offices showed reductions in:

  • Anxiety

-37%

  • Anger

-44%

  • Depression

-58%

  • Fatigue

-38%

  • Confusion

-30%

  • Overall Negativity

-65%

  • Overall Stress

-50%

No-plant (Control group) showed the opposite trend:

  • Increased Negativity

+(20-40)%

Prof. M Burchett reported that stress can be increased with artificial plants.

Green Plants for Green Buildings Presents:

LEED Certified Building Projects which have successfully earned credits based upon the inclusion of indoor plants.

Unlike Australia’s Green Star green building rating system, to date the USGBC’s LEED system does not yet offer a specified direct credit for the inclusion of plant programs. Within the current LEED section titled “Innovation in Design” it is possible for plants to be part of a specially developed use of plants or a the use of plants within a type of educational design.

GUIDELINES

NIPA has published a set of Guidelines for Architects and Designers.  The document is a draft version and open to comment.  It can be found under the Accreditation Menu and may be downloaded if required.

Are you UP-TO-DATE WITH LATEST WHS CHANGES ?

The national harmonised Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws are due to commence on the 1st January 2012.

What's happening with the WHS laws?

WHS Act. The Commonwealth has joined Queensland, NSW and the ACT by becoming the latest jurisdiction to pass the Model WHS Act. Tasmania, SA and the Northern Territory have introduced the WHS Act into their parliaments. All seven of these jurisdictions are on-track for the January 2012 start date. Victoria and WA although remaining committed to the harmonisation process, have requested a delay in implementing the new laws in their States.

WHS Regulations. The WHS Regulations and the 11 first stage Codes of Practice were endorsed by State and Federal Workplace Relations Ministers on 10 August 2011. The Regulations and Codes of Practice have undergone significant amendment following public comment and are available for download from Safe Work Australia. (Click Here)

AGM 2012

An invitation is extended to all members of the NIPA to attend the 12th Annual General Meeting to be held at the Palamont Building, 32 Duntroon Street, Brendale (Brisbane North, Queensland) from 5.30pm on 28th February, 2012.

Any interstate and overseas members visiting Brisbane at that time would be strongly welcomed at the meeting.  Some interstate members have already arranged to Skype into the meeting.

Current President, Peter Dolley, has announced he will be vacating the President’s chair in 2012 after four years at the helm having taken the role over from past President Chris Johnson.  Together these two past Presidents steered the Association through the World Financial Crisis and safely into the 21st Century.

Current Vice President, interior plantscaper Steven Bretts, based on Queensland’s regional Sunshine Coast has already began lobbying for support to sit in the chair in 2012. The position of President requires a significant sacrifice of time, regular travelling and representing the Association at meetings and events.

The 2012 President will need to oversee the rebranding of NIPA, the roll out of the planned industry technician certification program, continued promotion of NIPA and educating Australia on the benefits of the interior plantscaping industry.

If he finds himself in “the chair”, Steven says he also sees increasing the number of strategic alliances with allied industries and target markets, such as designers and architects, as areas he will focus on.

“Setting goals for the next 12 months and renewing NIPA’s programs to reach those goals is important,” he said.
